ENLIGHT research initiative published in Horizon Research & Innovation Magazine, 23 August 2024
Our bioprinting project to aid the development of new therapies for diabetes has been published in the Horizon Research & Innovation Magazine on August 23rd, 2024 with title ‘3D-printed living cells pave way for tomorrow’s medicine and cruelty-free animal products’.
Dr. Riccardo Levato, associate professor of biofabrication and regenerative medicine at the University Medical Center Utrecht and Utrecht University, is leading an international team of researchers from Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland in a groundbreaking EU-funded project. The initiative spans from 2021 to 2025 and focuses on developing a miniature 3D-printed pancreas made entirely of human cells.
The goal of this research is to enhance the reliability and accuracy of testing new diabetes therapies. In the long term, the team hopes their work could pave the way for lab-grown organs suitable for human transplants. The project represents a significant step forward in both diabetes treatment and regenerative medicine.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 964497.
This exciting development was recently highlighted in an interview with Tereza Pultarova.
